Findings of EMG analysis
Results achieved so far from EMG analysis at the gym have been
truly staggering. What I considered in some cases as good exercises
can be exactly the opposite. There are many ideas and myths within
the back pain and fitness industry that are truly shocking. The
garbage and new fads constantly coming through in magazines of
better training machines and ways of doing exercises is a major
misdirection - the problem is that the level of marketing is so
good it makes these concepts so believable and like a one solution
will fix all.
Exercise is a science, what is right for one individual will
highly likely not be correct for the next person. The problem is
that the human body is so durable that you can perform an incorrect
form of exercise for several years before the damage is done.
Similar to smoking, some people can do it for a short time and
develop problems and others can seem to smoke for decades and have
minimal side effects.
No doubt you will have seen someone hooked up to the EMG and
observed the various exercises analysed. EMG is amazing for finding
what activity is the cause of a back problem or which muscles are
causing excessive compression on the spine.
My belief is that the environment we grow up in with factors such
as; do we live in a house with stairs, is the section we live on
hilly or flat, are we left or right handed, sports or hobbies we
have played, and our genetics will all greatly impact the muscle
imbalances we develop and the impact those imbalances have on our
musculoskeletal systems.
The best piece of advice I could give anyone now is to start
changing how you do all daily activities. i.e. Put your shirt and
jackets on with the other arm first, walk up and downstairs leading
with the opposite leg, the more activities you can do differently
daily the better off your musculoskeletal system will be.
